We’re at 91 – but I was wrong about the rules for the semi-finals!

Posted on Saturday, May 22, 2010 in All Posts, Lilith Fair Competition

Either they changed the rules or I was hallucinating, but I just downloaded the official rule sheet from OurStage.com and we need to be in the top 20 to make the semi-finals by Monday night!  Impossible?  Hardly.  With your help, we got this!  Here’s how:

If you want to guarantee our track, Right Here Now, will come up at least once a day in your judging process, simply make Catherine Scholz your “favorite artist” by clicking the green button above once, then click it again when you get to the OurStage website.

Then,

Judge on OurStage or Judge on Facebook

Judging to make the top 20 for the semi-finals ends 9pm PST, 11pm CST and 12am EST Monday.
Remember to take a screenshot if our track comes up and email it to us for some freebies!
And may the best artist win!

Lilith Fair Contest: We’re at 117/634 – need to get into top 20 by Monday to make semi-finals

Posted on Wednesday, May 19, 2010 in All Posts, Feature, Latest, Lilith Fair Competition

We’re at 117/634 – getting so close to the top 100 – and the top 20 is where we need to be by Monday to make semi-finals.  This is so exciting to think we have a shot at playing at Lilith Fair on July 5th in San Francisco.  The thought of putting together a band and rehearsing a full set, then performing for thousands on people seems like it’s actually within reach!

Would you be willing to spend 20 minutes or more judging tracks until Monday to help us reach the semi-finals?  If you get to our track, take a screenshot and send it to us and we will send you some goodies!

Judge on OurStage

or Judge on Facebook

Another couple of ways you could help:

1) Leave a comment on the page for our track

2) “Like” the track while you are logged into Facebook

THANK YOU!!

New song sample: “Right Here Now”

Posted on Friday, January 22, 2010 in All Posts, Podcasts, audio

I am excited to share this preview sample of “Right Here Now” with you.  This song is being co-produced with Michael Logue at SunSound Studios in Grass Valley, CA.  Enjoy the expanded slow rock feel with vocal harmonies and lyrics that remind us to stay present.

Tomorrow at the See Jane Do Passion into Action Conference, I will be performing this song live shortly before 1pm.

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

This song is going to be on the next album, scheduled to be released on 2010.

Lyrics:

Sometimes she speaks without making a sound.

Sometimes she screams so loud it shakes the clouds.

Oh, but she’s right here now.

Sometimes I feel like a ghost in this town.

Sometimes I feel like an angel flying around.

Oh, but I’m right here now.

Sometimes he floats away from the light.

Sometimes he shines like a star in the night.

Oh, but he’s right here now.

What a beautiful night among friends at the South Yuba River on last Saturday, 7.11.09.  On a granite slab jutting out over the water, Michael and I mused for the river folks through the Ginger Ninja’s pedal-powered sound system.  The acts that followed us included Ruby Turple with Cedar • Bear Dyken with Summer Moon • The Ginger NinjasObo MartinSHAKE YOUR PEACE! and Fossil Fool.  Definitely a night to remember.  Thanks, Kipchoge, for inviting us to shrimp with you at the river!

Lyrics to “Just Not Like Her”

Just Not Like Her

Lyrics and music by Catherine Scholz

Some say she rations her kisses.

Some say she’s selling the lot.

Some say she’s smoking the smidgens of something she simply is not.

Come drink from her wineglass of wishes.

Maybe she’ll give you a shot.

‘Cause brother, you’re just standing witness.

Remember the love that you’ve got.

You see, this is her reckless memory of kisses and sweetness and wine.

Some say that she’s pining for penance,

dropping light-years down endless heart-mines.

But silence is all she requires for dancing and diving within.

So no one can make her a promise.

No one can do that again.

Can love track her down in the darkness?

She bids love to wring out the red.

Can lovers reshape the old treasons that run like the wind through her head?

She’s never been quite so forsaken.

She’s never been quite so unsure.

Her soul has not been quite this shaken.

She’s never allowed this before.

And it’s just not like her to be waiting around,

Standing alone with her feet on the ground.

No, it’s just not like her to be humble and free,

Hungry for humor and mystery.

Please come to her garden of wishes

and maybe she’ll give you a plot.

‘Cause brother you’re just standing witness.

Remember the love that you’ve got.

Lyrics to “Whirlwind Girl” by Catherine Scholz

Posted on Monday, March 30, 2009 in All Posts, Archives, Feature, Latest, Podcasts

Whirlwind Girl

Lyrics and music by Catherine Scholz

Whirlwind girl, spinning dust.
Spinning Tree, she must be lost by now.

By now her leaves have gone from green
to shades of yellow, orange, red,
to bridges, then to rivers,
then to sea…

Whirlwind girl, spinning time.
Spinning Tree, she must be fine right now.
By now she’s light, though lost and nameless,
hungrier, though young and blameless,
strange to be given something free.

CHORUS:

Growing her roots straight down,
waving her leafless crown,
holding the cryin’ ground,
Spinning Tree.

Whirlwind girl, spinning gold.
Spinning stars, she must be old by now.
And like the nights, her sighs grow longer.
And as her tender roots grow stronger,
Her heart becomes a whirlwind spreading dust,
as it must.

Whirlwind girl, spinning round.
Holding Earth, she knows to kiss the ground.
Forever home, though lost and nameless,
Hungrier, though young and blameless,
Strange to be given something free. Spinning Tree.

CHORUS

Whirlwind Woman, spinning fire.
Spinning sound, her own desires near.
Happier, her name is faceless,
Healthier, though old and blameless,
strange to be given something free,
and now it’s strange to be GIVING something free,
Spinning Tree.

CHORUS

What listeners say about the music of Catherine Scholz…

Posted on Monday, March 2, 2009 in All Posts, Feature, Latest, Press

What listeners have said about the music of Catherine Scholz…

“It is rare an artist comes along… where their music, their lyrics, dive deep through to your soul. Catherine Scholz is one of those artists…” – Linda Savitz

{Her}…music evokes so much emotion and beauty…” – Elisa Parker, KVMR DJ

“Cool, but not detached; passionate, but not preachy; intelligent, but not smarter-than-thou stylish alt-folk… informed alternately by Shawn Colvin’s eye for detail, Joni Mitchell’s ear for melody and a rootsy, homespun feel. The purity of her lullaby voice is framed by tasteful, understated playing and the overall effect is like a warm bed on a summer Sunday…” – Paul in the UK

“Warm, beautiful, straight to the heart…” -Barbara Tanksley

“There is something about Catherine’s music that seems to break down barriers… Her voice has a rich, real presence and friendliness… it’s also that her songs are as forthright and guileless as they are absorbing and alluring. This music may surprise you in how it opens you up. Listen… and see if you connect with this artist. You don’t have to try very hard. You don’t have to try at all.” – Bob Villwock

“Full body deep meaningful, yet soft and gentle, while being soothing and easy to listen to… pleasure and bliss…” – Sunwolf

“Reminiscent of the great folk singers that I grew up with, Catherine’s new CD is filled with heartfelt, emotionally provocative lyrics… With every listen, the songs keep taking me deeper toward a joyous, peaceful state of being…” – Tom Gill

“…Catherine’s songs communicate deep emotion characteristic of a woman searching for the maturing parts of herself. Love, loss, and meaning are presented in a pastiche that is true and irresistible. Her music speaks to all of mankind with gentleness and truth.” – MaryAnn Ferolo

All the ways you can listen…

Posted on Tuesday, February 24, 2009 in All Posts, Latest

So many ways to hear “Whirlwind Girl” – download MP3′s or listen to internet radio, but because MP3′s are compressed audio files, the quality is not as good as a CD.  So the best way to experience the sound of “Whirlwind Girl” is to buy an autographed CD directly from Catherine at Catherinesmusic.com and listen on some of your own sweet, hi-fi speakers!

a song-prayer for our President’s safety from Threshold Choir founder, Kate Munger

Posted on Tuesday, January 27, 2009 in All Posts, Latest, Videos

Lyrics: “May the depth and strength of our dreams lift you up and keep you safe.  May the depth and strength of our hope keep you whole.” – Kate Munger, Founder of Threshold Choirs

The all-women Threshold Choirs honor the ancient tradition of singing at the bedsides of people who are struggling: some with living, some with dying. The voice, as the original human instrument, is a true and gracious vehicle for compassion and comfort. The choirs provide opportunities for women to share the sacred gifts of their voices at life’s thresholds.

When we are invited to a bedside, we visit in small groups. We invite families and caregivers to join us in song or to participate by listening. We choose songs to respond to musical taste, spiritual direction, and physical capacity. The songs may include rounds, chants, lullabies, hymns, spirituals, and choral music.

The service is our gift; there is no charge. We gratefully accept donations for our ongoing expenses.

For more information about Threshold Choir, visit www.thresholdchoir.org.

If you are a female Nevada County resident interested in joining our local Threshold Choir, contact Beth Karow at 530-432-3090.

      Happy Holydays!

Posted on Friday, December 19, 2008 in All Posts, Latest

      Happy Holy-days!

No matter what your religious beliefs, may you be safe, may you have mental peace, may you have physical peace, and may you live with the ease of well-being.
I am constantly amazed by the mysterious generosity of this world.  Just when I think I’ve experienced all the goodness that I possibly can, another amazing moment arises and it seems that
      all I have
to do is choose to accept it.

An overview of 2008: This year, I co-produced “Whirlwind Girl” with Michael Logue at SunSound Studios.  Thanks to CDBaby, it’s on iTunes, Rhapsody, Pandora and many more.

On the homefront: My son turned 6 and he continually surprises me with new questions about reality, causing me to question everything I believe in the process.  This is a good thing!

      What’s next? New Album Ideas:

I am currently in the brainstorming process for my next album project.  Right now I am considering a 2009 Winter Solstice album.  If you have ideas to share, please share them at my guestbook on my website.

In gratitude: Thank you, my faithful listeners, for supporting my musical path in so many ways, from buying the album, writing reviews, inviting me to play at events and on the radio, and sending me love on the internet and by email.  I would especially like to thank Michael Logue for all of his magical love and support.

Stay tuned to catherinesmusic.com for more exciting developments in 2009!

      Yours in harmony,

      Catherine
